WHAT'S A GravelDURO?
Great question! Gravelduro?
Gravelduro, is a Midwest (flint) hilly twist on the mountain inspired Grinduro. Flint Hills Gravel Road Race + TT + KOM + Mountain Bike-Style Enduro = a continuous loop in the majestic Flint Hills gravel, where finishing times aren’t based on overall loop time, but the agrageted timed segments.
100 Mile Course = 1 TT + 1 KOM + 6 Timed Descents
50 Mile Course = 1 TT + 1 KOM + 3 Timed Descents
How do i TRAIN FOR IT?
Well..... You don’t need to be on a serious training regimen to do well, if that is what you are asking. Each timed segment is between 5 and 20 minutes. The segments will total somewhere around 20 miles of total timed distance. The output for the day will be like a weekend group ride with some descending intervals.
We would like to see each racer keep a 10mph pace.
IS IT DANGEROUS?
Gravelduro is only as dangerous as you make. Loose gravel, timed descents... Obviously this could get ugly. It is called BLEEDING KANSAS after all! We are not condoning riding in a way that harms you or others but those who are willing to push the edges will be rewarded...
WHAT BIKE SHOULD I RIDE?
Cyclocross bikes are the most capable Gravelduro bikes, but you can ride any pedal-driven bicycle (no electric-pedal assist!). At events similar to this there is a mix of ‘cross bikes and 29er mountain bikes with a handful on road bikes (not suggested).
IS THIS A SERIOUS BIKE RACE?
YES! & NO! There will be serious racers and there will be plenty of people just out to have a good time. The appropriate mix of good times and competition is up to the individual. BUT, we are providing the ingedients for both!
SUPPORT CREWS ALLOWED ON COURSE?
Support crews are not allowed on course except to pick up a rider who is abandoning the event. If a support crew is found to be on course (except at THE official checkpoint), that rider will be immediately disqualified from the event.
IS FOOD AND LODGING INCLUDED IN THE ENTRY FEE?
Ugh! Not exactly. You gotta find a place to crash... BUT! Each racer will get beer and eats when the day is done. Fear not you will have your fill of the gravels, food and hard earned libation once you vanquish this fine fall day on Flint Hills gravel.
CAN I USE A GPS?
Yes. We will get you the details soon!
CAN I BRING MY FAMILY?
Of course! Bring your friends and family. The more the merrier. MHK and the surrounding area have tons of great experiences just waiting to be discovered.
There are also plenty of volunteer opportunities! (wink wink, nudge, nudge...)
WILL THE COURSE BE MARKED?
Not sure yet.... Should we? Que sheets and a full GPS maps will be available to download.
DO I NEED TO BE A DOWNHILL DEMON OR A CYCLOCROSS CHAMP TO RACE?
No. The descents are only as hard as you make them. Everything is rideable, and it’s our hope that the only time you need to clip out is to stop for food and the finsih!
WHEN IS THE RIDER’S MEETING/REGISTRATION PACKET PICKUP?
Friday September 20, 2019 will be rider check in and race meeting. We believe the rider’s meeting should act as a chance for everyone to socialize with each other, catch up, and hang with the gravel community.
